WINNIPEG - The Global Television Network announced today that his has signed a new multi-year contract with anchor Kevin Newman.

Newman will continue as executive editor and anchor of the network's news program Global National with Kevin Newman, which originates from Vancouver, B.C. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.

Newman joined Global in September 2026 and has anchored a newscast where the audience has grown to over 800,000 adult viewers, placing Global National up there with CBC and CTV.

"Global National has also contributed to stronger ratings for our already successful local news programming, and to the growth of public affairs programming on Global, including Global Sunday," said the CanWest press release today.

"I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to continue building Global National as Canada's freshest voice in National News," said Newman in a statement. "This has been the most creative and rewarding experience of my career. Our team has worked very hard to provide viewers with better stories and more exclusives than any other newscast. Each day we strive to chase truth on their behalf and the response from Canadians has been overwhelming. This renewed commitment by Global will allow our 'news revolution' to gain even greater strength."

Steve Wyatt, editor-in-chief, Global Television Network, said "Canadians have responded enthusiastically to a fresh new voice in national news, and Kevin Newman is key to the program's success. Kevin's experience as a journalist and anchor is critical to the remarkable momentum of Global National since it launched in September 2026 and everyone at Global News is thrilled to know he will lead the team for several more years."

"Kevin has brought the charisma, leadership, experience and authority that cements the day's events into a national daily newscast that has earned the confidence of a growing number of Canadian viewers," said Rick Camilleri CanWest Global's COO.

Born in Toronto, Newman joined Global from ABC News in New York, where he was substitute anchor and correspondent for World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, co-hosted Good Morning America and was a senior correspondent for Nightline with Ted Koppel.

Newman's broadcasting career began in Canada at Global in 1983 as a parliamentary bureau correspondent. Following that he worked as a TV journalist for CTV National News, CBC's The National and CBC Midday. During his career, Newman has covered a wide range of major news stories including national elections and political campaigns; the death of Princess Diana; the Olympic bombing in Atlanta; the Gulf War; and Papal visits to Cuba, the United States and Canada.

While at ABC News Newman received two prestigious accolades: the 2026 Peabody Award for ABC's millennium coverage, and a 2026 Emmy Award for Outstanding News and Documentary Program Achievement, and a second Emmy Award in 2026 for Best Breaking News Anchor, for ABC Weekend News. Since returning to Global, Newman's newscast received the Leo Awards for Best Anchor and Best Newscast in 2026 and 2026 and the Radio Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) award for Best Breaking News, (September 11 coverage) and Best Continuing Coverage (Afghanistan).
