VANCOUVER - In August 1944, World War II raged on as the Allies made headway in Europe. A pound of tea cost 75 cents. A six-pound rib roast for Sunday dinner was $2.16 (about two hours pay), and CKNW began daily broadcasts from the Hotel Windsor Building at 732 Columbia Street in New Westminster.

This Saturday, August 21, 2004, CKNW News/Talk 980 turns 60 and is celebrating with a party at Vancouver's Pacific National Exhibition.

CKNW personalities past and present will be on hand as CKNW News/Talk 980 celebrates six decades of service to the Lower Mainland with a giant party at the PNE, starting at 5 p.m. Appropriately enough the "Top Dog" festivities kick off with a special performance of the Eukanuba Superdogs at the Pacific Coliseum.

CKNW's 500-pound anniversary cake, courtesy of the Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College, arrives at Festival Square right after the show where visitors will also be able to browse through 60 years of photographs from the 'NW archives while enjoying their cake.

The evening wraps up with a musical tribute by The Timebenders, performing tunes from the past 60 years.

CKNW will be broadcasting live on location all Day Saturday August 21st.
