Toronto/Calgary, - Shaw Communications' new video on demand customers will be able to draw on more content thanks to a deal announced this week between it and Alliance Atlantis.
A long-term agreement will see the broadcaster, producer and movie distributor provide movies for Shaw's VOD service, which is set for a full commercial launch this month in Calgary.
Alliance Atlantis has a sizeable movie library and will supply current releases (using the existing pay-per-view window) as well as older titles from its film catalogue.
Titles to be available in the fall include John Q and Amélie, (September), The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Blade II (October) and 40 Days and 40 Nights (November).
Shaw's VOD service is aimed at its best customers as only those with Shaw high speed Internet service and a digital cable box can get it. Shaw VOD can only be ordered via a special Shaw web site which is open only to its high speed customers. Once the movie is ordered and delivered, the set-top box functions like a VCR.
The Alliance/Atlantis deal is the second for Shaw's VOD product, following an earlier deal announced with Hallmark Entertainment.
