  • WINNIPEG – CanWest Global media executive David Asper has

left the board of directors of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

CP reported on a confrontation with players and staff following a weekend game, and his subsequent resignation.

Asper, credited with helping navigate the CFL team through some rocky financial straits, resigned after the Bombers lost 19-17 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday.

Video footage aired by CKY-TV showed Asper, who appeared to be upset and shouting, walking beside team president Lyle Bauer towards the Bomber offices following the game.

CKY and the Winnipeg Sun reported that Asper also got involved in “heated confrontations” with some players.

Bauer would not comment on Asper’s resignation except to say Asper helped the CFL team.

“He was involved in the club in very difficult times financially and made great contributions,” he said. “It’s not appropriate for me to comment on his reasons for resigning. I have no right or position to do that.”

Asper, executive vice-president of the Winnipeg-based multimedia giant, would not comment on the incident.

When asked about the board resignation he said, “I would call it retired … I’ve got a lot of things on the go.”

Asper was on the Bombers board for five years. He served as the club’s chairman of the board and was a CFL governor during the 2024 and 2024 seasons.
