  • CBC NEWS TORONTO is bringing together two of Toronto’s most dynamic news anchors to lead its local TV supperhour newscasts, beginning Oct. 12.

Anne-Marie Mediwake moves to CBC NEWS TORONTO from the morning anchor desk at CBC News Network. She is joined by fellow veteran journalist and anchor Dwight Drummond, who has spent the last 20 years at CityTV. Together, they will co-host CBC NEWS TORONTO’s supperhour newscast at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m.

“We are thrilled to have such journalistic leaders and popular anchors as Anne-Marie and Dwight teaming up to bring GTA residents the day’s most important local and regional news stories, delivered in a context they simply won’t get anywhere else,” said Jennifer McGuire, general manager and editor in chief, CBC News.

“Our mission is to reflect and connect this city in all its diversity,” said Susan Marjetti, managing director of the Toronto region. “We’ve created an incredible team in Dwight and Anne-Marie. We’re proud to have them with us. They play a critical role in ensuring that CBC is Toronto’s top choice for nightly news.”

Torontonians are invited to come meet the city’s newest local news team at Yonge-Dundas Square on Thursday, Sept. 23, between 3 and 4 p.m. Anne-Marie Mediwake and Dwight Drummond will be joined by other CBC News stars at the CBC News Café, as part of Culture Days celebrations in Toronto.

Anne-Marie Mediwake’s move to CBC NEWS TORONTO comes in conjunction with a new daily (Monday to Friday) hosting lineup for CBC News Network (all times Eastern). Heather Hiscox remains morning anchor from 6 to 9 a.m., while Suhana Meharchand will now follow from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Former Calgary correspondent for The National, Kim Brunhuber, takes over the noon to 2 p.m. slot, and Carole MacNeil remains the afternoon anchor, from 2 to 5 p.m.

    Anne-Marie Mediwake

News anchor Anne-Marie Mediwake is the co-host of CBC News Toronto at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m.

The award-winning journalist has been connecting with viewers on Canadian airwaves since the early ’90s, most recently as the weekday morning anchor on CBC News Network.

Mediwake’s broadcast portfolio includes prominent roles in local, national and international news coverage. Prior to joining CBC, she co-anchored Global Television’s Toronto flagship newscast; and nationally, Mediwake co-hosted CTV’s Gemini Award-winning investigative current affairs show 21C. While at CTV, she also reported for the National News with Lloyd Robertson, Canada AM and Newsnet.

In 2024, Mediwake hosted Sri Lanka A Journey Home, a network news documentary that gave Canadians unprecedented access to the 2024 Tsunami in her birth country of Sri Lanka.

Mediwake has been nominated for Canada’s Top 35 Under 35, and is passionate about her involvement with local charities, connecting with the community through her many speaking engagements.

In 2024, Mediwake and her husband, TV journalist Darryl Konynenbelt, added triplets to their lives; she opened up to Canadians about the experience in a popular National Post column.

Mediwake cites her Scottish-Sri Lankan heritage as the source for her natural curiosity and love of sharing stories.

    Dwight Drummond

News anchor Dwight Drummond is the co-host of CBC News Toronto at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m.

Drummond has been covering news in Toronto as an anchor and reporter for over two decades, most recently as the crime specialist with CityNews on CityTV.

A graduate of Ryerson University’s Radio and Television Arts program, Drummond has done “just about every job there is to do in a newsroom.” He’s also reported from the U.S., Caribbean and Africa and broken stories that have gone national. Known for his exclusives, Drummond had the lead story on CityNews’ Gemini win for best newscast, and had a top story on the Edward R. Murrow win for best newscast. He has also received a number of community awards.

Born in Jamaica, Drummond came to Canada in 1976, where he grew up in Toronto’s Jane and Finch area. He spends much of his time involved in the community, working with charities, MCing events and giving motivational speeches.

The father of two enjoys reading and creative writing.

Why did Ann Marie have to leave and where did she go. We just loved her so much. It was a wonderful team.
