OAB Announces Recipient of OAB Hall of Fame Award

  • The Ontario Association of Broadcasters is honoured to present the 2024 OAB Hall of Fame Award to JR Shaw! A Board nominated honour, the OAB Hall of Fame is presented to individuals who spent most of their careers working for private broadcasters and demonstrated a commitment to the highest standards of broadcast excellence.

    JR Shaw is founder and Executive Chair of Shaw Communications Inc. In 1966, he founded Capital Cable TV a start-up cable television provider in Edmonton Alberta, which grew into Shaw Communications Inc.; a diversified communications company whose core business is providing broadband cable television, high-speed internet, digital phone, telecommunications services, (Shaw Business) and satellite direct-to-home services (Shaw Direct) to 3.1 million customers. In addition, he founded, and his family remains active in Corus Entertainment, spun off from Shaw as a separate public entity September 1, 1999.

    Over 40 years, JR Shaw drove Shaw’s expansion across western Canada, expanded the employee base to 15,000 staff and built a publicly traded company (TSX-SJR.B) with a market capitalization of approximately 11 billion. He credits the company’s success to a relentless focus on customer service, building a superb team of managers, positive attitude, hard work and treating everyone as he would like to be treated. He embodies these values and continues to ‘walk the talk’, serving as an example to Shaw employees everywhere.

    Within the television industry, Mr. Shaw has offered his time and expertise in a variety of places, serving on the Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Committee for the Canadian Cable Television Association (CCTA). He is the past Chair of the Board of Governors of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton. In recognition of his lengthy service, Mr. Shaw is an Edmonton Northlands Honorary Life Director. In 1998, Mr. Shaw was invited to become a Director of Suncor Energy Inc., a Canadian energy company that concentrates in extracting and upgrading oil sands and marketing fuel. From 2024 to April 2024, Mr. Shaw served as Suncor’s Board Chairman. He is a past Director and Chair for ShawCor Ltd., an energy service company that specializes in products and services for exploration and production. Mr. Shaw serves as President and Director of the Shaw Foundation, a philanthropic organization established in 1970 by his father, Francis E. Shaw.

    JR was born in Brigden, Ontario, in 1934. He and his wife Carol have four children, Jim, Heather, Julie and Brad, twelve grandchildren and four step grandchildren. All of their children are actively involved in ongoing Shaw business operations. Since 1995, JR and Carol have lived in Calgary, Alberta.

    JR Shaw will be presented with the 2024 Hall of Fame Award at the Ontario Association of Broadcasters’ fall conference, CONNECTION 2024 Gala Awards Dinner. The Gala Awards Dinner will be held Thursday, November 7th, 2024 at the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel, 901 Dixon Road in Toronto. Additionally, the Dinner will include presentations of the Community Service Awards and Ontario Broadcast Order of Achievement.
