Cogeco prepares for VOD push

4/3/2003

Montreal, - Cogeco Cable announced today that video on demand is now available to the bulk of its customers.

As of March 31st, VOD has been deployed to 85% of households overall, 92% in Ontario and 71% in Quebec. Among Cogeco digital cable customers who are aware of this new service, 53% have tried it in Ontario compared to 63% in Quebec, says the company.

Cogeco is not yet releasing buy rates, since the service is new in many areas. It is launching a multi-media consumer marketing campaign next week in its markets to push VOD.

Cogeco's VOD, like most cableco VOD, is still short on blockbuster movies but Ron Perrotta, vice-president of marketing and sales for Cogeco is hopeful deals with the major American movie studios can be worked out.

"We're in active negotiations with the American majors," he told www.cablecastermagazine.com. The titles Cogeco VOD has now, "is not the ideal long-term content we hope to have. We will beef up (content) before our next push in the fall."

For now, the company wants its customers to get used to the functionality and begin thinking of it as "a first stop before they truck out to the video story," he said. "Down the road, it will be the ultimate destination."
