Kids TV ACT-honoured

TORONTO - This evening, the Alliance for Children and Television (ACT) honoured Canada's top English-language children's programs, as well as the producers and creators who made them happen during its Awards of Excellence ceremonies at the CBC's Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto.

This year featured a record number of entries and a total of ten programs were honored in the following categories:

* The CBC Grand Prize for Best Program, all categories, to Tales from the Neverending Story, Muse Entertainment & The Movie Factory Film GmbH, producers. CBC, broadcaster.

* The TVOntario Award of Excellence, all genres, ages 3 to 5 category to The Hoobs, The Jim Henson Company/Decode Entertainment Inc., producers. TVOntario, broadcaster.

* The Corus Entertainment Award of Excellence, animation, ages 3 to 5 category to Henry's World, AAC Kids/Cuppa Coffee Animation/TV Loonland, producers. Family Channel, broadcaster.

* The Family Channel Award of Excellence, all genres, ages 6 to 8 category to Incredible Story Studio, Vérité Films / Minds Eye Pictures, producers, YTV, broadcaster.

* The TVOntario Award of Excellence, animation, ages 6 to 8 category to Angela Anaconda, Decode Entertainment Inc., producer. Teletoon, broadcaster.

* The Breakthrough Films & Television Award of Excellence, all genres, ages 9 to 12 category to Tales from the Neverending Story, Muse Entertainment & The Movie Factory Film GmbH, producers. CBC, broadcaster.

* The National Film Board of Canada Award of Excellence, animation, ages 9 to 14 category to What about Mimi? , Studio B Productions Inc., producer. Teletoon, broadcaster. Roboroach, Portfolio Entertainment, producer. Teletoon, broadcaster.

The TVOntario Award of Excellence, all genres, teens category to Degrassi: The Next Generation, Epitome Pictures, producer. CTV, broadcaster. Our Hero, Heroic Film Company, producer. CBC, broadcaster.

Other prestigious awards presented were:

The Cuppa Coffee Animation Special Jury Award to Dave Thomas, director, for the quality of the animation in Henry's World, AAC Kids/Cuppa Coffee Animation/TV Loonland, producers. Family Channel, broadcaster.

The Independent Production Fund Outstanding Achievement Award to Peter Moss, executive vice-president of programming and development for the Corus Television Group. Peter Moss has worked in the field of children's entertainment for over 25 years. In television he has worked in both private and public broadcasting. He has been the dead of children's department for the CBC, and v-p of programming and production for YTV and Treehouse TV.

The Universal Studios Canada Emerging Talent Award to Clint Eland, president and executive producer at Mercury Filmworks and chairman and founder of Sentient Research Inc.. Clint Eland has been involved in the production of animated television and feature films as an artist and technical producer since the age of 19. A visionary in his field, Clint became the youngest ever faculty member at the internationally recognised Vancouver Film School where, at 22 years of age, he began writing and teaching the curriculum on compositing and special effects for the school's award-winning traditional animation program.

Two years later, Clint left teaching to pursue opportunities in the private sector. In 1998, with $100,000 in investment capital, he and his business partner Reg Eland founded Mercury Filmworks, an independent digital paint, compositing, 3D and post production studio servicing the traditional animation industry.

Two special mentions of the jury were also presented as follows:

* Swap-TV, Breakthrough Films & Television/TVO, producers. TVOntario, broadcaster, for excellence in the execution of the concept.

* From Far Away, National Film Board of Canada, producer. CBC, broadcaster, for excellence in direction and writing.

The Alliance for Children and Television (ACT) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to promote youth television production of the highest calibre. For nearly three decades, in addition to granting Awards of Excellence, the ACT has offered its members professional development activities such as seminars, conferences, workshops and screenings, enabling producers and other creators to keep abreast of the ever-changing youth community.
