  • OMNI producers win awards

    7/11/2003

TORONTO - OMNI Television announced that two of its producers - Vac Verikaitis, producer of OMNICulture, and Jules Elder, associate producer of In the Black - have won awards from the Canadian Ethnic Journalists' and Writers' Club (CEJWC) in recognition of their respective programs.

OMNICulture, produced by Rogers Media Company Productions, was acknowledged in the CEJWC's Television News category as a "groundbreaking series" that combined OMNI News with reports produced by OMNI-TV's diversity programming unit.

In the Black, a 13-part original OMNI Television production, was honoured in the Television Feature category for "highlighting contributions made to the nation by Black Canadians."

This year's awards were presented June 27th (Canadian Multiculturalism Day) at the Velma Graham Rogers Theatre as part of the CEJWC's 25th annual awards ceremony and anniversary gala.

"OMNI Television is very honoured and recognizes the significance of being acknowledged for journalistic excellence by one's own colleagues and by those who have dedicated their lives to multilingual expression," said Madeline Ziniak, vice-president and station manager, OMNI Television.

The event was taped for broadcast as a two-hour special presentation that will air on OMNI Television, Sunday, July 20th: on OMNI.2 at 7:00 p.m.; and on OMNI.1 (CFMT) at 10:00 p.m.

The CEJWC and its awards program were founded in 1978 by the late Sierhey Kharma Ziniak, who felt the ethnic journalism community needed an inclusive association. From its beginning, the CEJWC has included editors, reporters and freelance writers from print, radio and television, as well as writers of fiction and poetry.
