Radio's Crystal Awards deadline approaching

TORONTO - The Radio Marketing Bureau's annual awards show, The Crystals, has issued its final call for entries to win its $10,000 cash prize.

October 31st is the deadline for entry. The Crystals is RMB's showcase for the best in Canadian radio advertising. Radio stations, advertising agencies and advertisers from all markets across Canada are eligible to enter. All entries must have aired on a Canadian radio station in 2002-03.

Complete details and entry forms are available at www.rmb.ca. The $10,000 cash prize goes to the winner of the Platinum Award for Best in Show.

There are six Crystals categories and a gala event to announce the winners will be held March 5, 2004, at The Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto, during Canadian Music Week. Tickets cost $150 each and include the lunch, plus access to morning workshops.

"This year's show will feature morning presentations by advertising guru Luke Sullivan, author of 'Hey Whipple, Squeeze This: A Guide to Creating Great Ads', and Matthew Ragas, co-author of 'The Power of Cult Branding'," said John Harding, president of RMB.

The first round of judging is done by panels in the west and east regions and to ensure fairness, the panels consist of judges from agencies, advertisers and radio stations."

Judges from the west are: Carolyn Patton, Calder Bateman Communications; Kai Clemen, Wasserman & Partners Advertising; Jim Noble, Bryant, Fulton & Shee Advertising Inc.; Ian Grais, Rethink; Alan Russell, Palmer Jarvis DDB; Ray Edwardson, SpotShop International Inc.; Joanne Reynolds, Alberta Theatre Projects; Luiza Zorilla, West Canadian Digital Print; Nelson Tonn, Fountain Tire; Lori Walker, Sobeys West; Myrna Barclay, SaskTel; Angie Beers, CJAY 92; Brent Warner CISN-FM; Murray Fuhrer, CKGY-FM; Darren Scott, CKBL/CHSU; and Jason Armstrong, CJIZ-FM.

Judges from the east are: Jim McVicar, The Media Planet Agency Inc.; Daryl Edwards, Total Communications; Don Veinish, Cossette Atlantic; Jennifer McLeod, Co-op Atlantic; Patrick Brown, Kelly's Stereo Mart; Phil Murphy, Cohen's Home Furnishings; Jill Canney-Benn, CKHJ-FM; Blair Patton, CJMO-FM; Mike Campbell, CJYQ/CKIX-FM; J. Calnan, CIEZ-FM; John Clarke, CHNS-AM; and Rob Seguin, CFLG-FM.

The final judging session will be held independently at a central forum in Toronto with a panel of judges drawn from across the country.
