  • CHOI-FM listeners to protest in Ottawa

    8/6/2004

QUEBEC - According to a report in this morning's Montreal Gazette, thousands of 98.1 CHOI-FM listeners will bus it to Parliament Hill on Tuesday in order to protest in person, the CRTC's recent decision to deny license renewal to the station.

The station offered tickets (for $9.81, of course) and has sold out all 35 buses in one day.

As reported on several occasions by broadcastermagazine.com, due to the content of what the station has been airing during its morning show over the past few years, the Commission - after numerous warnings and rebukes - refused to renew the station's license. Genex Communications-owned CHOI is the top-rated station in the market and recently upwards of 40,000 people rallied in Quebec City in support.

Newly minted Heritage Minister Liza Frulla has already noted that neither she nor cabinet can not overturn such a decision and that the station's owners must appeal to the Federal Court of Canada. However, such a process will take many months and CHOI's license expires at the end of this month.
