Agilent Technologies ESG Vector Signal Generator Boosts Performance for Testing 2.5G, 3G and Broadband Wireless Communications Systems and Components

MISSISSAUGA, Ont., Sept. 25, 2001 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the Agilent E4438C ESG Vector Signal Generator, the most advanced member in its series of ESG signal generators.

The ESG Vector Signal Generator delivers significantly greater baseband signal generation performance, a wider RF bandwidth, expanded connectivity, greater waveform memory, and faster processing and switching speeds. The instrumentís capabilities make it one of the most comprehensive vector signal generators available for evaluating the performance of 2.5G, 3G and broadband wireless communications systems and components. The ESG is available with measurement frequency ranges of 250 kHz to 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 GHz.

The ESG Vector Signal Generator is intended to meet the needs of engineers who design and develop the next generation of wireless communications systems and components. Its features make it equally suitable for operation in R&D;, engineering and production test environments. The ESG can create standard and custom digital modulation formats, filtering and burst shapes, as well as analog modulation formats. It offers an exceptional level of accuracy and spectral purity, a highly configurable architecture, an internal function generator, electronic or mechanical attenuators, as well as frequency, power, and list step sweep capabilities. When configured with Agilentís optional baseband generator, the ESG can exploit the power of Agilent Signal Studio PC software tools, which make it simple to add capabilities to match the needs of the latest communications signal formats.

The ESG Vector Signal Generator includes new features that allow manufacturers to reduce their test costs and increase throughput, while maintaining an extremely high level of measurement accuracy. For example, a new I/Q symbol builder and faster microprocessor allow the instrument to create all the physical layer channels required for W-CDMA conformance testing. It offers fully coded signals on the traffic channels, compressed mode, and 16 OCNS for W-CDMA. The ESG also has an integrated high-performance Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) generator that enables CDMA users to set a calibrated level for Eb/No, Ec/No, or carrier-to-noise ratio.

The ESG Vector Signal Generatorís 160 MHz external RF bandwidth and 50 Msymbols per second internal baseband generator provides essential capability for generating the higher data and symbol rates of 3G and broadband wireless communications systems. Its 100 MHz sample data rate with 16 bit, 400 MHz DACs (4x oversampling) particularly benefits designers of wireless LANs (802.11a and 802.11b), who must characterize 16 and 22 MHz signal bandwidth. The higher sample rate also eliminates the need for multiple reconstruction filters that are typically required to remove undesired signal images in the sampled spectrum. The high sampling rate effectively spreads these images so that they no longer present a complex filtering challenge. In addition, the ESG has an extremely large arbitrary waveform memory of 32 Msamples (160 Mbytes), which allows several waveforms to be loaded simultaneously into memory. Users only need to build waveforms once, which significantly reduces test time for power amplifier manufacturers who must sequence through many different waveforms.

The ESG Vector Signal Generator provides other capabilities, including:

o support for wireless communications standards, including 3GPP
W-CDMA, cdma2000, cdmaOne, GSM/EDGE, 1xEV-DO, 802.11a, 802.11b and Bluetooth all in one instrument, providing investment protection as your testing needs change;
o adjacent channel power performance to verify stringent ACP requirements of power amplifiers;
o alternate timeslot power control, which simulates a real GSM/EDGE transmitter, sending multiple signals at rapidly varying power levels to test under realistic conditions;
o single-ended and differential outputs that facilitate testing of ASICs and digital I/Q modulators, which eliminates the need for external circuits and increases measurement accuracy because offset corrections are performed within the instrument; and
o hard disk storage of 6 Gbytes for longer playback and less reliance on downloading.
