PITTSBURGH, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Marconi (Nasdaq: MONI; London), a global provider of innovative communications solutions, today announced that ALLTEL will use Marconi's wireless network planning tools to optimize its existing network and to plan for the roll-out of its new network based on CDMA, a key technology for evolution to third-generation (3G) wireless solutions. Marconi will provide its cdma2000 module and deciBel Planner(R) network planning software as part of its solution for ALLTEL, the sixth largest mobile operator in the United States.

ALLTEL selected Marconi in a competitive bid because of its expertise and commitment to the deciBel Planner line, Marconi's Windows-based network planning software solution. During the product evaluation process, deciBel Planner generated the most accurate results in modeling ALLTEL's network.

"As ALLTEL's customer base expands, and customer demand for bandwidth services grows, optimizing our network is key to minimizing our costs, leveraging our investments, and enhancing services to our customers," said Mike Stafford, Director, RF Engineering at ALLTEL. "The Marconi network planning solution will allow us to achieve all these objectives in an integrated, cost-efficient solution."

"Like other wireless operators, ALLTEL wants to ensure that its network is performing at peak levels and deciBel Planner will add real value to their business," said Larry Woods, Executive Vice President, Wireless Network Planning, at Marconi. "It will reduce costs and help build revenues. At the same time, the solution will enable the efficient future development of the network, providing ALLTEL with investment protection and competitive advantage
for its network assets."
