Fujinon to Win Technical EMMY Award for HD Lens AdvancesOctober 18, 2005

Fujinon will be awarded a Technical Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for “Lens Technology Developments for Solid State Imaging Cameras in High Definition Formats” during this year’s ceremony to be held on September 29th at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton, NJ. Specifically citing the introduction of Fujinon’s “GO-Technology” and its Precision Focus Assist System, Fujinon has been instrumental in the creation of new digital production systems that rival traditional filmmaking techniques for high-quality television and motion picture production.

As a result of such advances, the production of HD programming using cameras with solid-state imaging technology has greatly increased, and HD production worldwide is rapidly expanding in popularity.”
With the transition from SDTV to HDTV, the amount of information a lens conveyed increased dramatically. The resolution of HDTV is two and a half times that of SDTV. Optical performance in terms of the lens’ resolution, chromatic aberration and distortion, needed to be improved dramatically. Fujinon established its GO-Technology to address those technical concerns. Longitudinal chromatic aberration was optimized to match sensor positions, while lateral chromatic aberration was decreased to less than one pixel size. Distortion was held to a minimum thanks to the wider image area and the linearity of the sensor. Ghosting and flair was reduced with new, multi-layer coatings.
Fujinon’s XA101x8.9ESM high-magnification zoom lens and HA13x4.5E wide-angle zoom are two of Fujinon’s most popular lens models, designed utilizing GO-Technology.
Because HD images also tend to be viewed on large screens, an unfocussed image becomes more noticeable. This led to the development of Fujinon’s Precision Focus Assist technology, designed to improve the quality of HDTV image capture in field and studio applications. Precision Focus Assist is a built-in feature that addresses precise focus issues in HDTV production stemming from the format’s shallow depth of focus and the lack of size and resolution in camera viewfinders. This is not an auto focus system, but a focus assist that precisely adjusts the lens for optimum focus. Using this system, a selectable area of the video image is sampled as the focus point. The camera operator can adjust the user selectable point with a roller-ball type of controller, similar to a computer mouse, to position the focus point. Precision Focus Assist is available on Fujinon’s XA101x8.9BESM HD zoom, HA22X7.3BRD HD EFP lens, the HA26x6.7ESM HD studio lens, and the HA13x4.5BRD-S28K HD wide-angle lens.
Fujinon was the recipient of a Technical Emmy Award in 1996 for the “Outstanding Achievement in Technical Development of Broadcast TV Lens.”
