The Academy Awards showcased why it is the #1 Television Program of the Year in Canada*. Last night's broadcast of The Academy Awards peaked at almost six million viewers, reaching a total of 10.6 million viewers, or nearly one out of every three Canadians. The star-studded broadcast, finished with a remarkable average audience of almost five million viewers (4.9 million), or 1.3 million viewers more than Super Bowl XLI (Global/FOX, 3.6 million, Feb. 4, 2007). In Toronto, Canada's largest television market, the Oscars posted a staggering 50 share amongst total viewers.

A revised snapshot of the Top 10 most-watched programs of the 2006-2007 season ranks The Academy Awards at #1, followed by nine separate episodes of Canada's CSI on CTV (Super Bowl XLI finishes at #12).

Canada's official red carpet arrivals special, eTalk at The Oscars, attracted 812,000 viewers. Hosted by Ben Mulroney from Canada's only official position on the red carpet - the number-two position next to ABC - the special featured interviews with all four of Canada's Oscar nominees as well as some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Road to the Oscars was the second-most watched program of the night with 3.2 million viewers. Earlier, the annual Barbara Walters special attracted 2.2 million viewers.

With no clear favourite for the Best Picture category, a detailed analysis of the Oscar telecast beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET shows Canadians stayed with the 3-hour, 50-minute broadcast to the very end, with nearly 4 million viewers (3.9 million ) tuning in to the last half-hour of the broadcast when Martin Scorsese's The Departed was named Best Picture. And from 11:30 - 12 midnight ET, The 79th Annual Academy Awards attracted a remarkable 39 per cent more viewers than last year's broadcast.

All figures quoted based on preliminary overnight data from Nielsen BBM Media Research and represent a nation-wide picture of television viewing in Canada.
