Directors Guild Calls on Parties for Pre-Election Policy Statements

The Directors Guild of Canada has called on the leaders of the four parties represented in the House of Commons to provide pre-election cultural policy statements as they relate to the film, television and new media industry in Canada.

"The last few federal elections have featured a regrettable lack of discussion of cultural policy issues," wrote Brian Anthony, DGC National Executive Director and CEO, in a recent letter to the four party leaders. He went on to note in his correspondence that this was too important an element of our national life to be overlooked in such important moments as federal elections, and that he was therefore seeking to give issues of interest and concern to the Guild the profile they deserve in the unfolding campaign.

Anthony also recently wrote to the heads of the four party research units in this regard, and, to assist them in preparing their policy statements, provided them with questions the Guild would like to see addressed in the statements, fact sheets related to the cultural sector in general and the film, television and new media industry in particular, and with other background information.

"Given the vitally important contribution our sector makes to the cultural life of Canada," said acclaimed director Sturla Gunnarsson, President of the Guild and Chair of its National Executive Board, "we are now seeking clear and unequivocal policy statements from each party in regard to the film, television and new media industry."

The policy statements from each party will be posted on the Guild web site as and when they become available.
