An engaging portrait of one of Canada’s most popular jazz artists, THE JAZZMAN is ready to strike a chord with TV audiences after wowing crowds at the Montreal World Film Festival.
Its television broadcast premiere on the Super Channel (S3) is on Sunday, October 25th, 2009 at 8PM.
Under the banner of Summer Pictures, the film was written, directed and produced by Josh Koffman, grandson of legendary jazz musician Moe Koffman.
THE JAZZMAN has received accolades and recognition in the press and stars Michael Ironside (TOP GUN, TOTAL RECALL), Corey Sevier (DECOYS, SMALLVILLE, INSTANT STAR), Laura Vandervoort (V, INTO THE BLUE 2, SMALLVILLE’S SUPERGIRL,CSI), and Corey Lee (INSTANT STAR, Universal Recording Artist “OVALOAD”).
The Montreal Gazette states, “…newcomer Josh Koffman’s lushly mounted fictional tribute to both his grandfather, the late, legendary Moe Koffman, and to the now-lost jazz clubs of that city. The elder Koffman’s music alone is worth the price of admission. Michael Ironside as the famed reedman can be considered a bonus.”
The works of renowned Canadian saxophonist, flute player and composer Moe Koffman are at the foreground of THE JAZZMAN. Although the story is not based on Moe Koffman’s life, Josh Koffman, drew own his own recollections of his grandfather and created a beautiful tale of a rebellious jazz musician. The Jazzman follows the life of John Kadly (Corey Sevier); his early childhood, his youth, his romantic life with Sara (Laura Vandervoort), and the struggles to fulfill his calling as a jazz drummer while living in the shadow of his local jazz legend father (Michael Ironside). The film is set against the backdrop of Moe’s Koffman’s invoking music.
The much-loved and celebrated Canadian jazz flutist, clarinet player, and saxophonist Moe Koffman had a five-decade career during which he recorded 30 albums and performed for internationally influential audiences such as Princess Margaret, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the chancellor of West Germany. Koffman passed away in 2001 after a long bout with cancer, but the musical legacy he left behind is still enjoyed by lovers of jazz.
