Astral's Harold Greenberg Fund is proud to announce that over $100,000 has been invested so far this fiscal year in eight project development, training and promotional initiatives across the country through the Fund's Industry Initiatives Program.
“We're proud to support a diverse slate of initiatives that carry filmmakers through their careers, from emerging filmmaker-focused training to established project development and promotion,” says the Fund's English-Language Program President John Galway. “Since our inception 26 years ago, we've remained dedicated to playing an integral role in supporting development opportunities for filmmakers across the country.”
The Fund has supported eight projects, totalling over $100,000, including:
• Whistler Film Festival- Whistler Summit
The Whistler Summit is a must-attend forum for filmmakers seeking information, partnerships and ultimately success in the increasingly competitive trillion-dollar global entertainment industry.
• Toronto International Film Festival® - Filmmakers' Lounge
Filmmakers' Lounge is the Industry hub at the Toronto International Film Festival. Festival filmmakers and delegates have access to a variety of filmmaker interviews, networking events and panel sessions, featuring established industry experts and film artists from around the world.
• Vancouver International Film Festival - Film & Television Forum
The Vancouver Film & TV Forum hosts a series of panel discussions, pitch forum, master classes, tete-a-tete appointments, roundtable meetings and speed dating sessions, all geared to the professional development of the local film, TV and new media communities.
• Atlantic Film Festival - Script Development Program
This is a unique development opportunity for Atlantic-Canadian writers. Four feature film outlines are selected and developed into treatments through workshops under the guidance of a top story editor. The Fund offers a $10,000 script development grant to the winning script.
• Planet in Focus Film Festival - Planet in Focus Green Screen Award
This innovative award is the first of its kind in Canada, designed to highlight how film and television professionals are putting environmental awareness into action through greener production practices.
Warehouse 13 producers took home the second annual award, including $5,000 cash and a certificate towards services of Planet in Focus' Green Screen Program.
• City Life Film Project
City Life's program aims to provide relevant skills and a foundation for disadvantaged youth to find their voice and build towards a career in film, television and other creative industries.
• imagineNATIVE Media + Arts Festival - Industry Series
This an international festival that celebrates the latest works by Indigenous peoples on the forefront of innovation in film, video, radio, and new media.
• Toronto International Reel Asian Film Festival
This is Canada's premier pan-Asian international film festival, fostering the exchange of cultural and artistic ideals between east and west.
In 2011/2012, the Fund supported 17 projects through the Industry Initiatives Program, investing over $230,000 in the Canadian film industry. Through these industry initiatives, we supported an additional six marketing projects, three short films and four feature film development initiatives.
Funded by The Movie Network and Viewer's Choice, the Industry Initiatives Program is reviewed annually by the English-Language Committee, including Suzette Couture, Damon D'Oliveira, Melanie Friesen, John Galway, Bryn Matthews, Jane Tattersall and Kevin Wright.
