Continuing with its dedication to expanding local programming across the country, Shaw Media is pleased to announce the launch of two new morning news programs at Global Montreal and Global Maritimes respectively. Dubbed the Morning News, both programs will continue in Global News’ established tradition of giving viewers a mix of timely information and in-depth conversation. Global Montreal’s Morning News and Global Maritimes’ Morning News launch Monday, January 28th and will air weekdays from 6-9am.
“As Canada’s fastest-growing news organization, the launch of the Morning News in Montreal and Halifax caps off what has been a highly successful morning show expansion across Canada,” says Troy Reeb, Senior Vice President, News and Station Operations. “Having launched morning shows in all local stations east of Saskatoon throughout the past year-and-a-half, we are proud to be providing viewers with 189 total hours of locally-produced morning news content every week, by far the most of any other network in the country.”
With both programs bringing together a team of vibrant, upbeat broadcast professionals and fresh, new ideas for delivering the news, the launch of the Global Montreal and Global Maritimes Morning News programs will give viewers an alternative to morning television shows presented by the competition in both markets.
Global Montreal’s Morning News:
Headed by longtime Global Montreal personality Richard Dagenais alongside Anchor/Host Camille Ross and Weather Specialist Jessica Laventure, the Morning News will provide Montrealers with a well-rounded take on news making waves in the community. As the city’s only locally-produced English-language morning show, the Morning News will move away from the larger, more ambiguous headlines and instead turn the spotlight on the stories and issues of most importance to the city’s Anglophone community.
Highlighting this mandate will be the Morning News’ regular use of a central breakfast location in Montreal’s multilingual and culturally-diverse West Island. This will serve as the hub from which Laventure conducts her weather hits every morning. With what essentially amounts to a dynamic on-location set, the Morning News will establish itself in the heart of the community, while giving viewers a chance to regularly interact with members of the show.
The Global News Montreal Team;
Richard Dagenais: Anchor/Host – An accomplished broadcast veteran, Richard Dagenais brings over 30 years of professional media experience as host of Global Montreal’s new Morning News program. Beginning his journalism career in print and radio, Dagenais first made the jump to television in 1990, working as reporter for CFCF Television’s weekly advocacy journalism program Fighting Back. First joining Global Montreal in 2024, Dagenais worked as a fill-in sports anchor and line-up editor before becoming a regular anchor for This Morning Live. Dagenais returned to Global Television in 2024 as temporary Anchor of the Evening News and Host of Focus Montreal, later becoming Anchor for Global Montreal’s News Final in 2024.
Camille Ross: Anchor/Host – Ross began her career with CTV’s NewsNet and Canada AM in Toronto before moving to to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to anchor and report for CTV. Making the leap to join Global Regina in 2024, Ross reported on everything from breaking local news to weekly crop reports. She was also at the anchor desk for Global Regina’s Evening News, Prime News, and News Final programs before moving to CTV Montreal in 2024. An avid traveler, Ross has visited parts of the United States, Europe and South America and in her spare time, hosts community and charity events
Jessica Laventure: Weather Specialist/Host – Prior to joining Global, Laventure was co-host of the MétéoMedia Morning Show as well as a special features host for MétéoMedia and The Weather Network, covering several high profile weather-related stories, including the spring, 2024 floods in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Laventure’s television career began in 2024 as a production assistant and reporter for Global Quebec (now Global Montreal), where she later became Host of QC Magazine, a half-hour program dedicated to reporting Quebec’s top news stories. A graduate of Concordia University, Laventure is trilingual and can speak English, French, and conversational Italian.
Global Maritimes’ Morning News:
Led by three dynamic on-air personalities in Paul Brothers, Crystal Garrett and Jill Chappell, Global Maritimes’ Morning News promises to provide viewers with an energetic, intelligent and insightful breakfast conversation in the morning. Buoyed by this strong team, the Morning News will report on the stories of most importance to Haligonians, while providing them with all the weather and traffic information they need to start their day.
As the morning progresses, the Morning News team will also report and discuss key lifestyles stories making headlines locally, nationally and internationally. The program will also feature interviews with community leaders and big-name celebrity talent alike, conducted out of Global Maritimes’ brand new, state-of-the-art Gottingen Street studio. This central location will ensure that the Morning News team is continuously at the heart of everything happening in the city.
The Global Maritimes Morning News team is as follows:
Crystal Garrett: Anchor/Host – No stranger to morning television, Garrett first worked as a sports anchor in London, Ontario while finishing her master’s degree in journalism from the University of Western Ontario. Garrett later hosted Global Quebec’s (now Global Montreal) morning news program This Morning Live before moving to Halifax, where she worked in local radio before co-hosting CTV Atlantic’s Breakfast Television. An avid runner, Garrett was a member of Canadian National running team in 1999, specializing in the 10km run and is a five-time Academic All-Canadian.
Paul Brothers: Anchor/Host – Born and raised in Newfoundland, Brothers landed his first job in television in 2024, as the Halifax host and producer for MuchMusic’s weekly music program Going Coastal, where he interviewed hundreds of bands from the East Coast’s bustling music scene. In 2024, Brothers landed as a job with national sports channel The Score, where he interviewed sports legends including Steve Yzerman, Jerry Rice, and Roberto Alomar. An avid mountain biker in the summer and an avid curling fan in the winter, Brothers spends plenty of time with his fiancé at curling rinks across the country.
Jill Chappell: Weather Specialist/Host– An accomplished anchor and producer, Chappell began her career as a performer at the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia and travelled the world with the production company. Looking to share more stories with a wider audience, Jill moved into television as a reporter, producer, and anchor for CTV Atlantic. While there, Chappell also hosted the annual IWK telethon for Children, raising the necessary funds for medical equipment, research, and patient support programs. When not volunteering, Chappell likes to dine out at the latest restaurants and practice yoga.
