Hot Docs is pleased to announce the theme of the 2013 Hot Docs industry conference is Rule Breakers and Innovators, an innovative conference program that will offer interactive sessions and practical tools for working within the rapidly changing landscape of documentary filmmaking. Highlights of the Rule Breakers and Innovators program include keynote presentation by Ondi Timoner, and the Masters’ Feedback series with Kirsten Johnson and Per K. Kirkegaard. Rule Breakers and Innovators will take place April 29-May 3, during the Hot Docs Festival April 25-May 5.
“Great storytelling is the essence of documentary, and the Internet offers a more direct relationship between filmmaker and audience in which stories can be told and audiences can participate,” says Elizabeth Radshaw, industry programs director for Hot Docs. “Crowd-funding, digital distribution, and interactive content, all marketed via social media, mean that filmmakers need new tools and knowledge to effectively connect with audiences.”
Documentary is as dynamic as ever. Rule Breakers and Innovators is an opportunity to engage in a conversation with the people who are pushing the evolution of non-fiction media, each in their own way. These are people who see opportunities in disruptions, who are blazing trails to reach their audience, who are creating value in places previously overlooked, who are taking pages from other industries, and who are undeterred by uncertain outcomes. From seasoned professionals to young upstarts, Rule Breakers and Innovators will probe the successes, failures and lessons everyone can learn from this group of inspired risk-takers.
Keynote speaker Ondi Timoner has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival twice. Her 2004 doc, DIG!, and her 2009 top prize-winner, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC, were both acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York for their permanent collection. Her other features include JOIN US (2007), THE NATURE OF THE BEAST (1994), and COOL IT (2010). Ondi currently produces and hosts a weekly talk show, BYOD, in which she interviews leaders in documentary filmmaking. She is also directing and producing a docu-series and web-channel called A TOTAL DISRUPTION, about the invisible superheroes that use innovative technology to transform our lives permanently. In her keynote address, Ondi will reflect on what this phenomenon means for filmmakers and the media industries.
In the Masters’ Feedback series, two docs-in-progress will receive candid feedback from acclaimed masters Kirsten Johnson (cinematographer, THE INVISIBLE WAR; director, DEADLINE) and Per K. Kirkegaard (editor, ARMADILLO, TPB-AFK). Part screening and part case-study, the sessions will offer a rare window into the creative process, and a dynamic exchange on story and structure.
In addition to these key programs, Rule Breakers and Innovators will feature popular returning sessions including International Co-Production Day, Kickstart, Micro Meetings, the Doc Summit and a variety of workshops. The conference will also provide delegates with opportunities for one-on-one and small-table meetings with leading thinkers and industry experts.
A number of limited-capacity, hot-topic workshop sessions will require pre-session sign-up at the festival for registered delegates. The full conference schedule will be announced in March.
Hot Docs is proud to welcome the Canada Media Fund as the presenting partner of the Industry Conference.
