The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada proudly saluted its members' outstanding achievements at the 23rd annual SOCAN Awards, held Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency Montreal Hotel.
"The SOCAN Awards probably are our industry's most intimate and special awards ceremony," said SOCAN president Stan Meissner as he opened the festivities. Tonight's celebration focuses squarely on the intense creativity of the music creators who live here. We are in a festive mood this evening, but we are aware of the challenges we are facing at a time when the value of music and Copyright protection are suffering constant erosion. Let's take a break tonight and celebrate the health and accomplishments of our best musical talents with our host and friend Michel Faubert."
As part of this 23rd edition, SOCAN awards were presented to authors, composers and music publishers for their 2011 accomplishments in the pop, concert, instrumental, film and television music genres. Patrick Norman, an artist whose stellar achievements of more than four decades have brought Francophone country music into the mainstream, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Guy Latraverse, a music production giant and pioneer artist agent and impresario, received the Special Achievement Award.
A number of Quebec songs having achieved more than 25,000 radio plays received SOCAN Classics awards, and their creators, Laurence Jalbert and her co-authors Pierre Carter, Deno Amodeo and Marc Gillett, as well as François Cousineau and Marcel Lefebvre, Manuel Tadros, Renée Martel and Louise Letendre, were warmly applauded by their peers.
The songwriters being honoured also included the creators of the 10 most performed Francophone pop songs of 2011, including Ariane Brunet and Sylvain Michel, Michel Rivard, Marie-Mai, Fred St-Gelais and Rob Wells, Frédérick Baron and Céline Dion, Francis Collard and Nelson Minville, Christian Bridges, Justin Nozuka and Zaho, William Deslauriers, Stefie Shock and Martin Tétreault, Vincent Vallières, as well as, again, Marie-Mai and Fred St-Gelais, this time with co-authors Martin Bachand and Marc Dupré.
The highly successful world music artist Élage Diouf received the Hagood Hardy Award while the internationally known composer Ana Sokolovic was presented with the Jan V. Matejcek New Classical Music Award. Mathieu Jomphe-Lépine, who has contributed songs to such American stars as Britney Spears, received the International Award for the most internationally successful repertoire of the past year.
Film and television music awards were presented to James Gelfand, Paul-Étienne Côté, Raymond Fabi, Anthony Rozankovic, Philippe Leduc, Lance Neveu and Kevin Tighe. Karl Wolf received the Chanson Anglophone award for the Quebec-written English-language song having received the most airplay across the country in the past year, and the Chanson Internationale award went to Louis Côté and K-Maro.
A parallel awards ceremony was held Monday, November 19, in Toronto for Anglophone music creators.
