Tony Burman, who has devoted nearly 35 years of his career to CBC journalism, and who has been Editor in Chief of CBC News, Current
Affairs and Newsworld since February of 2000, announced today that he will leave his position July 13, 2007.

“Tony Burman is a brilliant journalist, a dedicated advocate of public broadcasting and a true leader,” said Jane Chalmers, Vice-President, CBC Radio. “Much of what CBC News, particularly CBC Newsworld and Television News, is today is the result of his vision and
leadership. CBC News and the Corporation as a whole owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.”

“It has been a privilege to lead this wonderful operation during such an important and dynamic period,” said Burman. “But this has been
longer than I had planned. Change and renewal are at the core of the best journalism and I look forward to directing my energy and enthusiasm to new projects.”

Tony has held a variety of senior roles at the CBC in Canada and abroad, and produced many award-winning news and documentary programs
for both CBC-TV and Radio. He has also been head of CBC’s all-news network, CBC Newsworld, renewing the program schedule and refocusing the
network on its news roots. From 1993-98, he served as executive producer of The National, CBC Television’s nightly flagship news and current affairs hour. Prior to that, as a news and documentary producer, he covered stories in more than 30 countries--including the Lebanese civil war, the Ethiopian famine in 1985 and the release of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Most recently, he led the integration of CBC News,
bringing together the news operations of CBC Television, Radio and CBC News Online.

“Tony leaves big shoes to fill,” said Richard Stursberg, Executive Vice-President of CBC Television. “We will be pushing forward with our
overall news renewal that will reinforce CBC News as a leader in Canadian journalism. Without diminishing the quality and focus of The
National, World Report and other signature network news shows, we will continue to re-invest more energy and airtime in our local and regional news.”

Esther Enkin will serve as acting Editor in Chief and Don Knox will oversee Television News and Newsworld during the transition period. A
comprehensive internal and external candidate search will be launched immediately.
