Sony of Canada Ltd., today announced that XDCAM leads the market for professional tapeless acquisition, according to sales figures announced this week.

With its growing list of interoperability partners and continuing product evolution and development, XDCAM is the fastest growing disc-based format, with over 14,000 combined worldwide sales to date.

“When it comes to tapeless acquisition, increasing numbers of customers are voting for XDCAM and its Professional-disc based format and we’re delighted by the uptake rates,” said Ivan Reel, Product Manager, Product Display/DVCAM, Content Creation Marketing, Broadcast Communication Solutions Group, Sony of Canada Ltd.

    Support for Apple

“Key to our success has been the support of over 30 different interoperability partners, including Apple, Avid, Omneon and Canopus. We’re excited that our customers now have a viable choice when it comes to robust, professional and disc-based workflow and production,” added Mr. Reel.

The new Sony XDCAM Transfer Tool for Apple Final Cut Pro brings XDCAM interoperability to an editing platform that already boasts more than 500,000 users and a prominent leadership position in the market.

“Customer response to our Final Cut Studio and Sony XDCAM HD tapeless workflow has been phenomenal,” said Rob Schoeben, Vice President of Applications Product Marketing, Apple. “Now that we've added support for variable bit rates and 25P, this groundbreaking Apple and Sony workflow solution is perfectly positioned to usher in a new era of HD production in Europe.”

    Avid compatibility

XDCAM also supports full interoperability with a range of Avid products including Xpress Pro, Liquid, Media Composer and News Cutter.

“With the rapid uptake of file based acquisition, XDCAM enables Avid users to adopt a full non-linear workflow”, said Owen Walker, European Product Manager for Editing products. He added: “This major workflow benefit has now been extended with our extensive support of the new XDCAM HD formats including proxy based editing.”

    Beyond products

Sony is committed to the full integration of XDCAM into the broadcast workflow. Key to this is the optimum usage of acquired metadata, proxy and Hi-Resolution video – throughout the production cycle.

Sony recently announced two new solutions that expand the line-up and ensure XDCAM is employed to its full potential:

HDXchange is the new workgroup production server. XDCAM Standard Definition and High Definition material can be stored centrally and accessed by a whole range of users – from the production staff to the craft editor. All media operations are conducted using an advanced suite of content management tools. This includes the ability to locate material based upon its visual similarity to a reference clip. The new XDCAM Cart Machine (PDJ-A640) automates the handling of XDCAM media. Up to 640 XDCAM disks can be stored for automated applications, such as ingest, transfer and archive.

The Sony XDCAM range now contains 12 products including camcorders, decks, drives and networked production components.
