TORONTO - CTV Specialty Television Inc. and Rogers Broadcasting Ltd. announced today that they have signed an agreement under which the division of Rogers Media will invest in 50% of CTV Specialty's mobile production and distribution business, operated through Dome Productions Inc. The transaction is expected to close in early January 2004.
Toronto-based Dome "is a full-service mobile production and distribution company, equipped with the people, resources, technical expertise, and facility experience to handle production requirements of varying size and complexity," says the press release. "Dome currently services a variety of Canadian, American, and International clients ranging from broadcasters, to sports television networks, to episodic television producers, to business television clients, offering a wide range of technically advanced mobile production facilities and distribution options."
The partnership intends to grow and expand as it invests in and operates high definition television (HDTV) production equipment, further securing its position as Canada's leading provider of mobile production and distribution services.
Canadian productions, especially live sports, have so far been limited in how much high definition production can be done due to the lack of a mobile HD production truck in Canada. All HD production done so far by TSN and Sportsnet, for example, have been shown through a mobile unite rented from the States. The Dome truck will be the first HD mobile production truck in Canada.
Look for the January 2004 issue of Broadcaster Magazine for more on this, which will be featured in our HDTV cover story.
