CanWest Global cuts 37 jobs at CHTV

Hamilton - Can-West Global has eliminated 37 jobs at CHTV in Hamilton.

The cuts affect behind-the-scenes technical positions and some management jobs.

The jobs will be phased out or transferred to station owner Can-West Global's TV operation in Toronto.

CH general manager Patrick O'Hara says the cuts are part of a restructuring to make the station ``more viable.''

He says none of the jobs are related to the station's news operations and no on-air personalities were affected.

CH had created about 31 new positions to expand its coverage of local news after it was acquired in 2000 by CanWest Global.

CH began life in 1954 as CHCH Television and became ON-tv when bought by Western International Communications in 1997.

Global changed the call letters to CH, as in Closer to Home, when it returned the station to its roots with local coverage.
