  • Grapes re-signs with CBC

    7/30/2004

TORONTO - CBC Sports this week announced Don Cherry will return to his post between the first and second periods of Hockey Night In Canada on his show, Coach's Corner.

There had been much speculation that CBC would not sign Cherry to another contract due, in part to his salary (a reported $500,000) and to his intemperate comments made through the years. This season, he implied that Europeans and French Canadians were less than the manly men Cherry thinks that hockey players are supposed to be - since he believes that they dominate the visor-wearing population of the National Hockey League.

The official federal government language commissioner actually investigated the comments.

However, Cherry, along with other on-air talent Bob Cole, Kelly Hrudey, Greg Millen and Harry Neale have all been re-signed.

"We're pleased to have Don, Bob, Kelly, Greg and Harry back for the upcoming season," said Nancy Lee, executive director of CBC Sports, in a statement.

Now all we need to know is whether or not there will be an NHL season this fall as owners and players have still not agreed on a new collective bargaining agreement.

Hockey Night In Canada is scheduled to begin on Saturday, October 16th.
