Quebec media companies must merge - Peladeau
Montreal - The chief executive of Quebecor says Quebec-owned media need to consolidate to protect the French language and culture.
Pierre Peladeau was the opening speaker at hearings before the CRTC into Quebecor's takeover of Videotron and its broadcast division, TVA.
Peladeau says the proposed transaction will ensure that French-speaking Canada can play a major role in the world of digital multimedia.
Peladeau says in the consolidating world of telecommunications the size of a company has become an ``indispensable element.''
Some groups, including unions and community access television, oppose the deal, fearing concentration of ownership.
