Ryerson expands broadcasting research with CTV fund

Toronto, - Ryerson University has established The Bell Globemedia Chair in Convergence and the Creative Use of Advanced Technology, thanks to a $2.5-million endowment from CTV Inc., as part of the BCE-CTV benefits package.

The Bell Globemedia Chair will expand the University's research into the creative use of technologies such as digital television and Internet broadcasting.

"The convergence of electronic communications is creating tremendous opportunities for Canadians. By exploring areas such as new media and the Internet, our newest applied research chair will help ensure Ryerson plays a vital role in securing Canada's position as a leader in this important sector," says Dr. Claude Lajeunesse, President of Ryerson.

An international search will be conducted to identify the best qualified individual to ensure the success of this initiative.

The Bell Globemedia Chair in Convergence and the Creative Use of Advanced Technology builds on Ryerson's international reputation for excellence in the fields of broadcasting and media. It will attract leading researchers who will explore the creative potential of new technologies by testing new production techniques, producing new media prototypes, and working with counterparts around the world.\

The Chair will enhance the research environment for Ryerson's new masters and doctoral programs in communications, as well as the research and teaching programs in the Schools of Radio and Television Arts, Journalism, and Image Arts.

"In order to remain competitive, indeed even to keep up with rapid global changes in electronic communications, Canada will need research facilities and a centre of applied scholarship of sufficient size and technical sophistication, with diversity of programs and financial depth, that can match efforts in the United States, Europe and the Far East," said Trina McQueen, president and C.O.O. of CTV Inc. "To achieve that goal, CTV is delighted to turn to Ryerson to establish the Bell Globemedia Chair," she added.

The Chair is funded through a $230-million fund CTV has created to develop new television programming and support broadcast talent development, culture, and innovation in Canada. The funds are part of BCE's application to acquire CTV Inc., and constitute the largest public benefits package in Canadian broadcasting history.
