Doc Zone, Suzuki Return to CBC-TV

  • Multi-award-winning series THE NATURE OF THINGS WITH DAVID SUZUKI returns to CBC Television for another fascinating season, the broadcaster has announced, taking viewers on an exploratory journey into science, the globe and the environment.

    The first show of the season airs Oct. 16, at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT).

    Later that evening, CBC’s award-winning flagship documentary series DOC ZONE gives documentary lovers what they want, informing them of the major stories of our time through a probing lens. Acclaimed author, actor and playwright Ann-Marie MacDonald returns to host on the season premiere, at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT).

    THE NATURE OF THINGS WITH DAVID SUZUKI premieres with The Hobbit Enigma at 8 p.m. The Hobbit’s story has all of the epic qualities of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Is it a new species of ancient pre-human, or just an abnormally small member of our own species? Reputations and entire careers are at stake. But do we have the evidence to solve the Hobbit Enigma?

    DOC ZONE begins its 2024 season with The United States vs. Omar Khadr. Omar Khadr was 15 years old when he was accused of killing an American soldier during a firefight in Afghanistan. He has spent six years as a prisoner in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and will go to trial there this fall. His defenders say the case against him is a web of lies, obtained under torture, in a military system condemned around the world. In this gripping documentary, CBC’s Terence McKenna delves into the case to explore whether Omar Khadr can get a fair trial.

    On October 23, THE NATURE OF THINGS WITH DAVID SUZUKI airs Rodney’s Robot Revolution at 8 p.m. Has the time come to meet an artificially intelligent robot? Engineer and inventor Rodney Brooks thinks so. Forget about all those shiny robotic home-helpers of the past¿Brooks is out to design a robot that can think for itself!

    Airing that night on DOC ZONE at 9 p.m. is Dolphin Dealer, a revealing documentary on the industry of capturing and selling wild dolphins. Chris Porter captures and sells wild dolphins for profit. One of the biggest dolphin brokers in the world, Porter claims that by supplying wild dolphins to marine parks and resorts, he’s helping humans and animals bond. Dolphin Dealer chronicles Porter’s Solomon Islands operation through four tumultuous years, as controversy erupts into violence and wild dolphins are captured for shipment to Dubai.
